Each of the reading machines in Radical of the Vertical Heart 忄 traverses the Chinese lexicon according to its own unique strategy. Unlike alphabetic reading machines (e.g., Automatype) that focus on complete letters, these ‘logographic’ readers analyse the strokes, radicals, and sub-components of characters in order to choose their path. When any of the machines lands on a sensitive word (for example, those which are now illegal to speak in Hong Kong) a warning is issued, and the reader is forced from traditional to simplified Chinese.
